Salisbury steak loaf

Get delicious Salisbury steak without all the work of making individual patties.

I love Salisbury steak, the tender patties and the savory caramelized onion sauce are so tasty.  What I don’t like is the time it takes to make, so I augmented a recipe I had for regular Salisbury steak and made it easier but just as delicious.  In the original recipe you have to shape and cook the individual patties, set them aside, make your sauce in the skillet, replace the patties, cover them with sauce, then bake them. Changing the recipe into a loaf I was able to cut out more than half the steps and shrink the hands on time down to only about 5 minutes.  Don’t worry I didn’t cut down on any of the flavor.

Ingredients

2 lbs ground beef

2 cans French onion soup, divided

1 cup bread crumbs, I like finely ground but you can use chunky if you prefer

2 whole eggs

1/2 cup ketchup

1 1/2 tbs Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp yellow mustard

1/2 cup water

2 tbs flour

Lets Cook

First you need to grab a large bowl to mix your loaf ingredients.  Put your ground beef, 1/3 of the French onion soup, bread crumbs, and eggs into the large bowl. Mix until well combined, I find that using my hands is the fastest but you can use a sturdy spatula if your squeamish about touching raw meat.  Now for baking your loaf I like to use a glass baking dish because it lets whatever excess fat is in the meat move out but you could also use a large bread loaf pan.  Shape your meat mixture into a loaf shape and place it into your preferred pan.  Bake at 375 for 1 hour or until the internal temperature reaches 165.  As your loaf bakes, in a medium sauce pan mix together the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, water, flour, and the rest of your soup.  On a medium heat bring the sauce up to a boil then let it boil until it thickens, 1-2 minutes, stirring often. Your sauce is done.  When the loaf finishes cooking let it rest about 5 minutes then slice it into patties and serve with a generous about of sauce on top.  So yummy!

Tips

Use your hands to mix the loaf mixture, it really is so much easier than using a spoon

Let the loaf rest that 5 minutes post cooking
